'Wisconsin Idea in Action' offers Jefferson County-UW database
MADISON - With the click of a mouse, Jefferson County residents now can find out how the University of Wisconsin-Madison serves communities, businesses and citizens in the area.

UW-Madison has created an online database - at www.searchwisconsinidea.wisc.edu - that contains more than 1,000 examples of university programs and projects benefiting the state.

Called The Wisconsin Idea in Action, the database is searchable by county, keyword, subject area and school or college. It is named after The Wisconsin Idea, the century-old principle that the university should improve the lives of people beyond campus and throughout the state.

Users of the database can select their county from a drop-down menu to get a list of programs and projects that either are active in their area, or are based in Madison and serve participants from the area. Each listing contains a thumbnail description of the activity with an e-mail link so users can communicate directly with the UW employee responsible. Each county's UW-Madison enrollment, alumni population, and various student placement totals are also included.

A few examples of what can be found in the database for Jefferson County include:

• 317 current UW-Madison students are from Jefferson County.

• 1,717 UW-Madison alumni live in Jefferson County.

In the last three years:

• 11 UW-Madison engineering students interned with Jefferson County employers.

• Registrants from 22 Jefferson County businesses participated in UW-Madison Executive Education programs.

• UW-Madison medical and nursing students completed 110 training courses at Jefferson County healthcare facilities.

The database also introduces searchers to facilities with ties to UW. Among them is the Johnson Creek UW Cancer Center, one of a group of community cancer centers in seven Wisconsin cities that partner with the UW-Madison Paul P. Carbone Cancer Center. The center has established alliances that extend its quality patient care and access to clinical trials.

Patients receiving care at the Johnson Creek UW Cancer Center are able to enroll in clinical trials through the Wisconsin Oncology Network and the Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group under the auspices of the UW Carbone Cancer Center. Consistent quality assurance is maintained through oversight provided by center physicians.

Another business with UW ties is Jones Dairy Farm in Fort Atkinson, which is a member of the Industrial Refrigeration Consortium, a collaborative effort between UW-Madison and industry. The goal is to improve the safety, efficiency and productivity of industrial refrigeration systems and technologies.

The consortium realizes this goal by conducting applied research, delivering knowledge transfer and providing technical assistance.

More database entries can be found by going to www.searchwisconsinidea.wisc.edu and selecting Jefferson County.

The program and project descriptions in the database can be searched by several subject areas that opinion research has shown are the greatest concerns that people want the university to address: quality education, jobs and the economy, and health and medicine. In addition, many listings are indexed under other headings, such as agriculture, environment and quality of life.

"Serving our state through the Wisconsin Idea is central to our mission, and our faculty and staff practice it every day," said Vince Sweeney, UW-Madison vice chancellor for university relations. "These teaching, research, outreach and public service activities that provide practical benefits to people show that, as we strongly believe, the boundaries of the university are the boundaries of the state."
