Richard Daniel Splies, 78, Fort Atkinson
Richard Daniel Splies, 78, of Fort Atkinson, died on Sunday, Dec. 6, 2009, at Fort Memorial Hospital.

On Jan. 25, 1931, Richard was born to Frank and Florence (McKee) Splies in Daggett, Mich.

Richard served our country with the Army Engineers during the Korean War.

He attended the Chicago school of watchmaking, graduated from Moravian College and then from the Moravian Seminary. Dick received a master's degree in art from the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

On July 1, 1950, Dick married Norma Buss at College Hill Moravian Church in Bethlehem, Pa.

Richard served in many Moravian churches, including Center Valley, Pa.; Rudolph, Veedum, London; Sister Bay; and St. Charles, Minn., and as chaplain at Marquardt Manor.

He was very active in church camps, organizing the craft program.

After retiring in 1978, Dick returned to repairing clocks full time, which was one of his first loves.

He enjoyed singing in choir and with a college quartet.

Dick was an artist and inventor. He made miniature working brass train sets, fine jewelry, and loved to make furniture, build scooters and go camping.

Dick's wonderful sense of humor will be missed by all who knew him.

Surviving are his wife, Norma Splies of Fort Atkinson; a brother, Robert (Lorraine) Splies and a sister, Jean Fink, both of Cottonwood, Ariz.; a niece, Carolyn (Joe) Peil of Waukesha; four nephews and four grand-nephews.

Richard was preceded in death by his parents; and an infant brother, Roger Splies.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 27, at Watertown Moravian Church with the Rev. Barbara Berg officiating.

Friends may call from Sunday, Dec. 27, from 1 p.m. until the time of service at the church.

Those wishing an expression of sympathy may wish to consider a memorial to the Watertown Moravian Church.
