The Fort Atkinson Generals made the most of a good situation - that situation being a three-run first inning.
The Generals plated all three of their runs in the opening frame and held off Columbus to win a Home Talent Night League game at Jones Park Thursday. The win helped Fort avenge a loss to the Reds three weeks earlier.
Shortstop Luke Sherratt manufactued a run for the Generals (18-10 overall, 5-4 NL) when he reached base on a bloop single to center field. He stole second base before advancing to third and on to home thanks to a passed ball and a wild pitch by Columbus starter Graham Fagerburg.
Catcher Brandon Duester and Tom Dehnert, who reached base via a walk and a single, respectively, scored on Dan Dean's double to center.
Dehnert hustled around from first and slid under the Columbus catcher Blaine Schmidt's tag to score the third run of the inning.
The three-run cushion was enough for Fort Atkinson starter Phil Brietzke to secure the victory.
Columbus (2-6 NL) was able to score single marks off the Generals' right-hander in the third and fourth innings, but only managed one base runner for the remainder of the game. The lone base runner reached on an error before Brietzke go the next two batters to ground out.
Brietzke allowed seven hits in seven innings of work. He struck out nine and walked two on the night.
Fagerburg gave up five hits and four walks on the hill for the Reds. He had seven strikeouts in six innings.
Fort Atkinson's win moves the team within a game of Marshall (6-3) for second place in the Night League Eastern Section X Division standings. Marshall lost, 5-1, to division-leading Jefferson Thursday.
The Generals and Firemen were scheduled to play last Thursday, but the game was washed out. The teams will make up the game Wednesday at Marshall's Firemen's Park to determine the second place finisher, and final playoff qualifier. Gametime is set for 7 p.m.
The Generals also have a pair of Sunday League games coming up. Fort Atkinson will host Evansville Sunday at Jones Park. The game will begin at 1 p.m.
Fort will make up a game with Utica that has been postponed multiple times. The game was originally scheduled to be played June 27.
The matchup of Southeast Section division leaders will be played Tuesday at Stoughton High School. The first pitch is slated for 7 p.m.
