Better Readers Make Better Leaders
What is Newspaper In Education (NIE)?
NIE is an international educational program that began in the 1930's. It's now a cooperative effort between the Daily Jefferson County Union, schools, individuals, civic groups and businesses to promote newspapers as an educational resource. NIE is a service to education and the community by promoting reading and by providing specific program materials to support educational programs for all grade levels. At no cost to schools, the Daily Jefferson County Union delivers newspapers to area classrooms on a daily basis. We also provide support material to teachers who request information on how to use the newspaper in their class. Local businesses and individuals serve as Partners In Education, sponsoring classrooms and partnering in other areas to help young people gain a better understanding of world events and their community through the pages of the Daily Jefferson County Union.
Why NIE?
Newspapers are a new, exciting and fun way to learn. With newspapers, students develop their reading ability, increase social awareness, build character and enrich their civic education, plus much more. Newspapers are fresh, up-to-date and practical. They help bridge the gap between the textbook and the real world. According to the Newspaper Association of America Foundation, studies in schools with at least some NIE programs did 10 percent better (on standardized tests) than students in schools that had no NIE program.
How can you help?
As a NIE sponsor, you will become a partner with the Daily Union in fighting illiteracy and providing area schools with educational materials, classroom support and educational supplements, all free-of-charge. The Daily Union supplies teachers with free copies of the Daily Jefferson County Union, but there is a need for many more. Please consider helping by donating to the NIE program today. By partnering with the Daily Union, together we can touch the lives and future of so many young minds.
