Today's youngsters weren't around for America's Bicentennial, but to those of us who were, it was a big deal. Along with the countless parades, concerts and festivals, people were painting patriotic murals on garage doors, re-enacting the signing of the Declaration of Independence and wearing red, white and blue for any and all occasions. It was in 1974 that I moved into St. Francis House, the Episcopalian church on the University of Wisconsin-Madison campus. "Pardon our dust." That's the usual apology offered when businesses or public buildings are under construction. If you read between the lines, it's actually saying, "This place is a mess, nothing is where it ought to be and it probably will take us longer than usual to serve you. Thanks for your patience."
