Krause dethrones Strom

By Jeff Seisser
Union sports editor

KOSHKONONG — Reigning Medalist champion David Schultz advanced to the second round of the Championship Flight, but the big news surrounding the opening weeks of the Daily Union-sponsored 78th-annual Fort Atkinson City Golf Match-Play Tournament was Sean Krause’s opening-round win over defending City champion Pete Strom.

CHAMPIONSHIP FLIGHT

Krause, a No. 15 seed, earned a 1-up win over the second-seeded Strom Sunday, dethroning the 13-time City champion while ending Strom’s quest for a fourth-straight City title.

Krause birdied the par-5 15th hole to break a tie with Strom, then the two Championship Flight regulars halved the 16th, 17th and 18th.

Krause fell behind the three-time defending champion by three holes after Strom won the fifth (birdie-4), and sixth and seventh (pars). But Krause, the 2002 City champion, pared both the eighth and ninth with 4s while Strom bogeyed each as Krause pulled to within a hole.

On the back nine, Krause tied the match parring the par-4 11th, then took advantage of Storm’s bogey-4 on No. 13 to take a one-hole advantage. Strom put the pressure right back on Krause winning the 14th, but Krause’s birdie on 15th decided the outcome.

It was Krause’s first win over Strom since defeating him in the 2002 City finals.

Krause will face Evan Wartgow, a 4 and 3 winner over Jim Herbst, in the second round.

Schultz, the top seed in the Championship Flight, eliminated Vince Hotter, 4 and 3.

The 2008 Medalist champion already held a three-hole lead over Hotter when he started the back nine with wins on the par-3 10th and par-4 11th.

Hotter began his comeback assault with a birdie-3 on 12 before parring the par-3 13th, but the momentum was short-lived as Schultz parred the 14th while Hotter had a bogey-5, all but ending his day.

Schultz will next take on Marc Wolfram, a 3 and 2 winner over Luke Tessman.

Dan Roloff and Pat Miller will square off in a Championship Flight second-round match.

Roloff earned a 4 and 3 win over Steve Petrosik, while Miller used the same margin to knock Bill Barfknecht out of the Championship Flight.

Rounding out the Championship Flight quarterfinalists are Jim Majewski and Denny Tessman.

Majewski, a four-time City champion, earned a 3 and 2 decision over first-time Championship Flighter Jason Stead, while Tessman had little trouble with Dick Merriett winning 8 and 7.

Majewski and Tessman will face off in the quarterfinals.

More Flight results appear in today's Daily Union.

Fort Legion suffer 1-0 heartbreaker

EVANSVILLE — A 12-strikeout pitching performance from left-handed hurler John Kotz was not enough to propel the Fort Atkinson American Legion baseball team to victory Tuesday evening in State Line League South Division play.

Fort Atkinson (5-3 overall, 3-3 SLL) squandered numerous scoring opportunities throughout the game and wound up on the wrong end of a 1-0 loss to host Evansville in eight innings.

After pitching seven shutout innings, Kotz came to the mound in the bottom of the eighth frame and promptly walked a pair of batters, one which scored the decisive run on FA’s lone fielding error of the day.

Kotz allowed just four hits and one unearned run over his seven-plus innings of work. In addition to striking out 12 batters, he also walked four to take the loss.

Brandon Deuster finished the night 2-for-2 with a double as the only player in the FA lineup to tally an extra-base hit and notch a multi-hit game.

Lucas Smithyman (1x2), John Kotz (1x3), Casey Musgrove (1x2) and Dan Rowley also tallied hits for FA in the loss.

The squad will look to bounce back Saturday with a road doubleheader against Monroe. First pitch is slated for 3 p.m.
